Intro 685 - the Local Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Law

Despite New York City's reputation for "diversity," it remains one of the most residentially segregated cities in one of the most segregated metropolitan areas in the entire country. View the map, and go to our demographics page.

Historically, the City itself helped create these patterns of segregation.

New York can't begin to make progress in this area until it recognizes that there is a segregation problem, commits to tracking the scope of that problem, and then makes certain that its own programs and policies work to undo segregation, rather than perpetuating segregation.

Moreover, New York needs to do much better in identifying the many housing units and public accommodations that remain inaccessible for those persons with disabilities who use wheelchairs.

Intro 685, introduced by Council Member James, would commit the City to all of these steps. Read the bill text.
