Referred to as a "WHICH" map, the largest demographic group in each Census Block Group is identified bhy color. The intensity of the color increases as the percentage of that group increases towards 90% or even higher. One can see at a glance that there are large swaths of New York City that are intensely segregated.
In this analysis, the Center compared the composition of Community Districts with the composition of the City as a whole. We then identified how much the presence of a group within a Community District differed from that group's presence in the City as a whole.
Note that when there are fewer people of a particular group in a Community District than in the City as a whole, the variance is capped at -100 percent; when there are more people of a particular group, the variance is not capped in that way.
An analysis of the difference between the percentage of non-Latino Whites in a Council District, and the percentage of the largest of three other groups: non-Latino Black, non-Latino Asian or Pacific Islander, and Latinos of any race.
