The Justice Department has announced a major settlement of a fair housing case where the community manager of a housing management company "openly displayed racially hostile materials... such as hangman's nooses, frequently referred to African Americans with racial epithets and generally treated white residents more favorably than African American residents."
The community manager, DOJ said, worked for NHP Management Company, a subsidiary of AIMCO, one of the nation's largest owners and operators of multifamily dwellings.
In addition to civil penalties, the settlement created a fund of close to $2 million to compensate victims of the defendants' discriminatory practices.
